CONGRESBURY CONSERVATION AREA

Did you know that the core of the village has been a Conservation Area since 1992?
The village survey questionnaire has highlighted that many were unaware of its existence.

Conservation areas are areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. They are designated by the Borough Council, or by the County Council.

The aim of such areas is to conserve ‘local distinctiveness’. Conservation area designation may afford protection against future unsuitable developments. Logically, future building and enhancements should add to, rather than detract from, local distinctiveness and support the historical development of the area.

Congresbury is fortunate in having a central area that is well worth preserving.

A plan showing the properties included within the conservation area is on the map at the end of this article.

Benefits

Living or having a business in a Conservation Area can have many benefits, for example such status helps to maintain or increase the value of property. Keeping the area attractive will help to bring in customers to businesses and buyers to properties.

Villagers can take pride in their heritage and play an important part in ensuring that the overall ‘distinctiveness’ of their Area is preserved. Yes, there are some increased regulations but none so arduous as to detract from the benefits.

Conservation Group Committee

The Congresbury Committee exists to review and comment upon planning applications within the area and aims to enhance the area.

Current members are Chris Short (Chairman), Anne Dimmock (Secretary), Graham Morgan, David Anderson, Derrick Holmes, Ken Hill & Maurice Whelan.

If you would like to join the committee or have any ideas on how to enhance the area please contact Anne on 01934 838891.

A BIG THANK YOU TO CONGRESBURY PRE-SCHOOL!

Dear Rita, Alison, Teresa and Barbara

I think you are all brilliant and want to thank you for the last 2yrs. I couldn't think of a harder job looking after energic 3-4yrs (let alone 20 at a time) and doing it with a smile. Yet every time I collected my son, I knew that he had a marvellous time at pre-school. You nutured him, built his confidence and listened to his endless stories. I know he will be going to the Glebe a happier child thanks to you.

Keep up the great work and see you again in 2yrs time.

Love and Respect

BRISTOL AIRPORT

Friends of the Earth,Bristol branch are campaigning to prevent the planned expansion of Bristol International Airport, which already causes as much carbon dioxide to be released as all the cars in Bristol put together, and which is planned to double in the next few years. They want to stop this and other unnecessary expansions happening and to protect the climate. If you agree with them then you can sign the petition setup on Bristol City Council's website, to ask for a meeting to be called by Bristol and North Somerset Council's to expose the environmental damage an expansion will cause. On October 6 we will launch new flood maps on our website
www.environment-agency.gov.uk.  They will be available in the What's in Your Backyard section and will replace the indicative flood plain maps currently available. The flood maps will be a key awareness-raising tool in targeting people at risk from flooding and will promoted as part of the flood awareness campaign that launches on the same day.

The new maps are based on digital terrain modelling and will provide a more consistent picture of flood risk for the whole country. This provides an improved picture than the previous system that was based on a mix of data. The new system also includes extensive up-to-date information including flood defences.
